Peppermint essential oil has some truly amazing uses, and as such it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that people that aren’t well versed in using essential oils often are found to contain some of it in their first aid kit. In my own situation, this essential oil was placed in my personal set in the ’80s when I began dealing with some pretty painful migraine headaches. Peppermint essential oil is and always will be an important element in my medicine cabinet, although happily, the headaches are gone.
There are a number of approaches to making use of peppermint essential oil: topically when blended with a carrier oil, as a tea or as an add-on to water, in a steaming bowl of plain water, or in a diffuser. What exactly is Peppermint Essential Oil?

There’s archaeological evidence that for medicinal use, peppermint has been utilized for thousands of years. The leaves of the plant itself were often consumed in teas together with food. Chances are the ancient people of this world had their own variation of the Mojito!
Peppermint is a great anti inflammatory and antiseptic, and encourages good circulation, helps the respiratory system, not to mention that it is a huge digestive help. In addition, it smells great and makes a brilliant breath freshener. The oil of peppermint creates surface heat, which then alleviates pain beneath the skin when the essential oil is applied to it.
Among the numerous possible uses for peppermint oil, below are 16 that are the most practical and useful in a survival scenario.
1) Ditch Those Head Aches
A couple of globules of peppermint oil massaged into the base of the skull and around the temples will help chase away a head ache. Add a mix of peppermint and lavender essential oils together with a roller bottle if you’re prone to regular headaches. Keep the bottle handy for when you feel a headache coming on.
2) Remove Bad Breath
Bad breath is usually a symptom of some underlying variable. Using peppermint can help with this symptom and in some cases, the cause itself. Place a couple drops on your tongue or the roof of your mouth, or you can add 5 drops to some water and use it as a mouth wash.
3) Alleviate Heartburn
Add peppermint oil to your tea together with a teaspoon of honey to help some heartburn.
4) Cool a High Temperature
A few globules of peppermint applied to the torso and blended with a carrier oil may help to bring down a high body temperature fairly quick. It is also possible to put several globules of oil on a wet washcloth to cool the body from head to toe with some nice relaxation.
Join peppermint with an oil like orange or lemon, and rub it into the rear of your neck. Breath in the oil that’s left in your hands. I really like this; it actually does work quite well when you feel a bit drowsy.
6) Helps with bloating
Rub the abdomen with some peppermint essential oil to help with bloating and indigestion.
7) Quit Itching
Use peppermint oil to prevent itching due to bug bites, hives, poison ivy, or poison oak.
8) Discourage mice from congregating in your home
Use some cotton balls that have been soaked in peppermint around different places of your house. Mice hate peppermint (and incidentally, raccoons aren’t big fans of it either).
9) Repel ants and spiders
Again, use some peppermint oil on a cotton ball or cotton pad and put it in places where you find ants and spiders. This works to eliminate aphids in the garden, as well.
10) Tick removal
Soak some peppermint oil on a qtip then rub it on the tick. Once you see the tick withdraw its head remove it.
11) Joint pain
I’ve shared this one with many people in the past. Combine 10 drops each of rosemary, lavender, and peppermint oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. It just works!
12) Alleviate seasonal allergies
Join lemon, peppermint, and lavender oils with your preferred carrier oil and the undersides of the feet, the rear of the neck, and across the brow, rubbing it in to make sure it penetrates the skin. This can bring immediate relief.
13) The same is true for tired, aching feet
Add several drops to a foot bath to ease bloated, raw, and overworked feet.
14) Mental strain alleviation
Add to a diffuser to give relief from depression, anxiety, and mental exhaustion. There’s a very energy boosting and emotional boosting effect with peppermint and it certainly will leave you refreshed. In addition, this is rather successful when your are feeling somewhat uneasy.
15) Home cleaning
A combination with vinegar and water will create a powerful, all purpose household cleanser!
16) Control bad scents
A couple of drops in the base of a garbage can in any room can also discourage those ants, spiders, and mice and will leave a fine, fresh, minty scent.
